DUCKY
DUCKY
This project is a rebrand of Ducky, a Taiwanese brand known for its mechanical keyboards and peripherals. Their products combine affordability, and compactness, providing easy customization for gaming, education, or office use, making innovation accessible to everyone.
Learning Outcomes
I chose Ducky for this project because of my passion for keyboards. Throughout the process, I focused on creating distinct identification systems for each product while maintaining alignment with the brand identity. Evaluating different executions based on the brand's keywords and its ability to uphold uniqueness proved to be essential in the designing journey.
Identity System
Keyboard packages typically followed a box design with minimal information, prompting the need to incorporate more type and details. Instead, the focus shifted towards utilizing typography over imagery. The box forms were explored to integrate type for angled information display. Additionally, the keycap set box doubles as functional packaging, allowing the keycaps to be displayed at an angle.
Digital Renders
Digital renders were artfully directed for Ducky packaging, ensuring all sides of the box displayed detailed information. The packaging is set against a neutral, monotone black backdrop to contrast the bright orange packaging without distractions, against the smooth, simple, black reflective surfaces.
Dielines
Information was displayed on the box to ensure consumers were fully informed about their purchase options and preferences. To distinguish Ducky, simple line illustrations replaced photography to effectively showcase the product and a deliberate choice was made to avoid using black as a color, unlike other prominent brands in the aisles.
Logo & Typography
The logo was redesigned to capture simplicity and evoke the tactile feel of keyboard clicks, with an angled design reminiscent of tech aesthetics. The logo mark of the duck emulates the same angles as the logotype. Typography plays a crucial role in the rebranding of Ducky, where the combination of ABC Whyte and Inktrap fonts brings a modern and dynamic feel to the brand identity.
Paired with the Ducky logo, this typography choice reinforces the brand's commitment to innovation and technological excellence, creating a cohesive and impactful visual identity.
Website
Given the complexity of keyboards, the website simplifies details by adopting the same grid system and elements as the packaging. It provides clear navigation and descriptions of each component. Moreover, Ducky can expand its reach by developing a mobile app, offering guidance on keyboard functions, product information, and incorporating augmented reality features for enhanced user experience.
AR Feature
I crafted this concept AR function as part of a broader strategy to enhance user-friendliness. This visual guide seamlessly integrates with the user experience, providing a comprehensive understanding of various keyboard functions, from adjusting RGB lights to troubleshooting. By utilizing your phone camera, users can easily access this innovative tool, leading the industry with its user-centric approach. Overall, the AR function enhances the user experience, aligning with Ducky's commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction.
Physical Prototypes & Specifications
Learning from making physical prototypes was integral to the process. If eventually produced, the packaging would mainly consist of paperboard for the outer package, while the inside of the keyboard packing would utilize e-flute board and paper foam on top of the keys as another layer. Additionally, biodegradable film pouch would be used for the cables and wires.
These materials were chosen to replace plastics, ensuring the final product aligns with environmental considerations.
Retail & Trade Show
Trade shows serve as an effective platform for Ducky, originating from Taiwan, to connect with their target audience. Utilizing consistent branding elements and systems, attendees can explore various keyboard types and purchase additional Ducky products, enhancing engagement and consumer reach.
The aisle will also feature a trial area where customers can experience some of the keyboards that Ducky offers firsthand.
