I created custom deskmat illustrations for GMK keyboard set designers, primarily using Adobe Illustrator for vector artwork. Each design was tailored to complement the unique aesthetic of the corresponding keyboard set, ensuring cohesive and visually striking deskmat designs. This project required collaboration with set designers to bring their visions to life.
GMK LASER DESK MATS
GMK is a German company that designs luxury keycaps for mechanical keyboards. For this specific set, GMK Laser already had a reputation, and this was the second round of group buy for this keyset. I had the opportunity to create the illustrations for GMK Laser featuring all the bright lights, dark shadows, and ‘80s vibes.
ELEMENTAL DESK MATS
I was given the chance by Mechs and Co. to design desk mats inspired by the four elements: water, earth, air, and fire. With creative freedom, I opted for vector illustration using a limited color palette. Each layer of the illustration transitioned from lighter shades in the distance to darker shades in the foreground, adding depth to the design.
GMK AURORA DESK MATS
The keycap set designer assigned me the task of illustrating GMK Aurora. The challenge was to maintain the same colorway as the keycaps, which already had a set Pantone color scheme. With limited color choices available, I had to find a way to create visually appealing illustrations that seamlessly matched the keycap set.
GMK COBALT + COPPER
DESK MATS
Both GMK Cobalt and GMK Copper were rendered using Blender. Each keycap set in the scientific elements series had a predetermined Pantone color scheme. I utilized re
peating hexagonal prisms to create an abstract and comprehensive representation of the inspired elements.
MW HAYASTAN DESK MATS
Creating the MW Hayastan desk mat illustration was s challenging task I overcame. Inspired by Armenia, one of the oldest countries and civilizations in history and the first Christian nation, I aimed to be culturally appropriate. Despite the lack of documented ancient civilization, I conducted research to understand native attire and the environment. I then illustrated these elements within the limited Pantone color palette provided. The challenge was ensuring that the illustration matched the specified colors accurately. To represent a rug, I opted for pixel art as a solution, both illustrations beautifully captured the essence of the civilization.
GMK LUNA DESK MATS
GMK Luna is inspired by the beloved Luna from everyone's favorite '90s series about the monster fighting guardian princesses of the moon. Given the opportunity by the designer of the GMK Luna keycap set, I designed the accompanying desk mat. Understanding the importance of art placement, I ensured that it remained visible even when users placed their keyboard or mouse on it. Positioning the art off-center or in one of the corners adds to its visual appeal.
GMK AEGYPTUS DESK MATS
The keycap set was themed around Ancient Egypt, one of the most powerful civilizations in history, dating back to the 4th millennium BCE. Instead of attempting to illustrate its appearance, I drew inspiration from hieroglyphics for the design. Many of the icons were crafted using angular forms and minimal rounded shapes to reflect the essence of this ancient civilization.
GMK DEVOTED DESK MAT
This set was inspired by the band, Roselia. Based on the series BanG Dream! A media franchise that has an anime, concerts, music and a mobile rhythm game. Roselia is known for their gothic inspired designs, their colorful characters and their powerful music. The desk mat was designed to complement the anime band-inspired keyboard, utilizing patterns and colors provided by the keycap set designer for cohesion across assets.
WORLD CENTRAL KITCHEN
DESK MAT
Eniigma Keyboards partnered with me to raise funds for World Central Kitchen through the sale of a deskmat I illustrated. The design features simple vector shapes of soup being shared together. 100% of proceeds went to the charity, providing hot meals to people around the world. They raised $1,000 across all vendors (see proof of donation)!
